According to the weekly report from Baker Hughes, the number of land rigs drilling the US has increased by 11 to 1,407 over last week. Representing an even larger jump, this is an increase of 281 rigs over last year at this time.

The North Dakota Petroleum Council this week reported that the number of land rigs working in the state reached 100 Wednesday – for the first time in 30 years. The organization pointed to advances in horizontal drilling as the catalyst for exploratory and development drilling in the state’s oil reservoirs.

Offshore the US, the drilling activity has also increased. Baker Hughes reports that the number of drilling rigs working in the waters offshore the US has also increased. Currently, there are 51 offshore rigs working in US waters, and increase of seven rig from last week and four over this time last year.

On the other hand, the Canadian land rig count is down 64 rigs from last week to 479 land rigs. Yet, this represents an increase of nearly 260 rigs from this time last year.
