During the current economic downturn, many US banks failed, including major financial institutions. Others had to be bailed out with taxpayer money. None of this happened in Canada, which has tightly regulated banks with very conservative lending practices. For example, there was no sub-prime lending in Canada. Would the US do well to emulate the Canadian banking system?
Yes. Canada obviously has a better model than the US.
No. More restrictions on banking mean fewer opportunities for the banks and for the businesses to which they lend capital.
We should look at the Canadian system and emulate the good parts but retain aspects of the US system that are favorable to growth and development.
