Charities and champions: the year in review 2013

    Mikaila Adams

Once again this year, the compassion of those in the oil and gas industry helped to fill pages of Oil & Gas Financial Journal. And again, I had the privilege to go "Beyond the Well" and learn more about the people, the interests, and the passions that compose the oil and gas community.

As is often written in this column, generating an interest in math and science in the younger generation, and particularly in girls and young women, is a goal of many seasoned professionals in the energy industry and was the subject of many columns this year.

The January issue column took a look at Katy Crawford, an Aberdeen engineer rewarded for inspiring youth. Crawford, a graduate of The Robert Gordon University and an engineer at Sparrows, was chosen to receive the Raising the Profile of the Profession – Promoting Engineering to Primary Students award from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for her work promoting a IMechE initiative to incorporate engineering principles into fun activities for children ages five and older.

February's issue focused on the Subsea Tieback Foundation (STF), formed by a group of industry professionals on the way to attend PennWell's Subsea Tieback Forum & Exhibition years ago. STF provides scholarships and sponsorships to students in offshore engineering-based curricula. In support of such activities, the STF now holds three separate fundraising events per year.

Companies like Petex and OILTEAM are also working to develop the future talent of the industry. Students in universities around the US and globally have access to widely-used petroleum industry software thanks, in part, to donations by Petroleum Experts (Petex), as well as a partnership created by Robert Gordon University (RGU) and Russian oilfield educational and engineering services company OILTEAM that aims to train the next generation of Russia's offshore energy professionals.

On the local level, the oil and gas industry plays a vital role in the economies in which companies operate. The mission of the Oil & Gas Awards—launched in 2012—is to recognize the outstanding achievements made within the upstream and midstream sectors of the oil and gas industry. Aon, Chesapeake, and Anadarko are just some of the companies recognized for corporate social responsibility initiatives this year.

Another company making its mark on the local level this year was Southwestern Energy Corp. The company has committed to fund Phase I of a three-phased project led by The Nature Conservancy of Arkansas to restore the Archey Fork of the Upper Little Red River in the state.

Others looked to aid those in unforeseen times of need. Two days of tornadoes in central Oklahoma in mid-May and record-breaking floods in Calgary and Colorado prompted many companies, including Noble Energy, Anadarko, EnCana, ConocoPhillips, Chesapeake, Continental Resources, Flotek Industries, and Phillips 66, to contribute time, money, and supplies to devastated communities.

Enbridge showed support to those fighting cancer as it once again sponsored a two-day, 200 km biking event. In five years, The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised over $38.3 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

And finally, as was his spirit in life, Kenneth R. Peak, oil and gas visionary and founder, chairman, and former CEO of Contango Oil & Gas Co., gifted $10 million to The Methodist Hospital in Houston. After a courageous battle with an inoperable brain tumor, Peak passed away April 19 at the age of 67.

Peak's vision and compassion will bring a new level of care to brain and pituitary tumor patients from around the world.

As I've done for years now, I spend a few hours each month getting to know more about the people who make up the industry and the passions that drive them. Thank you for your generosity and your stories. I look forward to another year.
