In early October, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), the Mexican national oil company, said it had discovered a new oil field with significant potential in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The announcement was deemed important enough that it was made by Mexico’s President Felipe Calderón.
The Supremus 1 well, 250 kilometers (about 155 miles) off the Mexican state of Tamaulipas in 2,900 meters (9,5134 feet) water depth, was drilled to 1,100 meters (3,609 feet) below the sea floor.
The well is less than 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from the international maritime boundary between Mexico and the United States.
Calderón said Pemex hopes to confirm new 3P reserves between 75 and 125 MMbbl of oil. If confirmed, Pemex will have doubled its current proven reserves when coupled with the recent Trion 1 discovery, announced in August. Earlier this year, Pemex reported a deepwater gas find in the Kunah 1 well at the Catemaco fold belt in the Gulf of Mexico.
